“Is the Blues blue?” My interview on NH Chronicle

Often we don’t know how the small steps forward in pursuit of what brings us joy will lead to other opportunities. Two years ago, I had recently completed my first collection Inhale Exhale and had exhibited the paintings at the Conway Arts and Crafts Fair. I would not have imagined at that time, I would have a segment on my local tv channel.

Now’s lets do a bit of time travel (queue time travel music):

I received an email inquiry in September of 2023 asking if I would be interested in being interviewed for the NH Chronicle, the local channel for WMUR.

Absolutely!

Although, I did let the reporter know that my studio has a very low ceiling (if you are 6 feet tall you would need to sit or be bent over to stand in my space). and it can be difficult to get good lighting in there since I am in my basement. This was not a deterrent and onward to scheduling the interview.

A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER…

Reporter and videographer show up at my house, thankfully it was a fairly sunny day so that would help with lighting the space. I invited the two of them into my studio space and we began having a fun collaborative time. The reporter, Mary-Paige shared that she had read about my show The Color of Music at The Peterborough Town Library and that grabbed her attention. That show was a year and half ago where I presented three large paintings that corresponded to my husband’s songs.

That show was my synesthesia debut.

After asking fantastic questions about my type of synesthesia and how I use that in making paintings, my husband Chad got to share the music he had written and where my other artistic marks have been left i.e. a personalized guitar and OBNE effects pedals.

Creative studio spaces are a fascinating landscape for so many people. Each artist crafts their environment in a way that assists in their art making process. Some have couches to lounge on, others jars filled with collected specimens, walls maybe splattered with paint or tidy with an inspiration board over a desk. Getting to share my art studio with others brings me great delight.

“When I am in your space, it inspires me to create.” one visitor has told me.

That lights up my heart, knowing my creativity light sparks the light in others. I flipped through my sketchbook (another personal mysterious landscape) and showed my studio tools while the videographer filmed. Then the most fun and rewarding part of the whole interview is when I mixed beautiful bold paint colors into buckets and threw the paint onto the canvas.

Normally I start a painting by getting something down on the surface as quickly as possible. Often I grab a color that I'm really excited by and make really bold strong marks such as throwing the paint on the canvas, using an oversized brush or using a roller on it.

And in case you are wondering, “Is the Blues blue? No.”

You can watch that November 2nd, 2023 NH Chronicle segment right here and it will take you to their website.
